I did indeed get it to work and I've been happily using this library in 4-bit interface mode with several different AVRs:

A slightly extended version of Peter Fleury's Text-Mode-LCD library (http://www.siwawi.arubi.uni-kl.de/avr_projects/#pf_lcd) by Martin THOMAS
